|
He enjoys going to the mountains to find unique woods such as spalded aspen (dark color veins running through it) burls, and wormwood which are difficult to find. He also enjoys gathering cottonwood, maple, box elder, cedar and other native woods. All of the wood that he gathers for bowls are from dead trees, the scrap wood is used for fire wood and the sawdust works great in compost, every bit is recycled! Henry turns his pieces on a lathe with tools he has made himself. As he turns a piece, the unique shape and design is created from the individuality of the wood. The turquoise is from the Southwest United States, and is carefully inlaid to enhance the personality of each piece.
Being an avid fisherman and outdoorsman all his life, he stated his career in wood turning after his retirement from 35 years with the telephone company. Always loving to create things, he has made jewelry, done rock polishing and welded with wrought iron but his true love has been wood turning.
